This refers to his skiing style. His turns in giant slalom are an attack, athleticism, and aesthetics – yet still a dance. What AJ Ginnis is to Greece, Joan Verdú is to his 80,000 fellow citizens in the Pyrenean country of Andorra and to Spain – a sports icon, national hero, and media darling.

A week before his 30th birthday, in the countdown phase for his fourth Olympic Games, the YouTuber of the ski elite joins Marcel Hirscher's VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports Team. The next ski character, a perfect fit in personality, performance potential, and mindset – and the boss is accordingly thrilled about his new recruit:

Barely has AJ Ginnis' move to VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports caused a stir, when Joan Verdú, the next international ski charmer, joins the team. Two careers that did not originate in the systems of major alpine nations but from their own vision. "Joan and AJ have inspiring parallels: They were kids with a big dream, without major resources, but with parents who gave everything to help their sons on this incredible journey – from ‘against all odds’ to the World Cup podium. When people say: The sport needs great stories – these are those stories," says Marcel Hirscher.

How does the move to VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports feel for Joan Verdú himself? He shares his thoughts in his first interview as a VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports athlete.

Thank you! I’m really excited. After 12 years with another brand, this switch was a big step for me. The energy, drive and innovation at VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports are extraordinary – I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together.

Growing up in Andorra was unique. We have incredible mountains and a strong ski culture, but there was never a real focus on competitions. As a child, it was hard for me to imagine ever participating in World Championships, because no one from my country had ever done it. But with a strong vision, hard work and determination, we achieved good results and eventually made it to the World Cup, World Championships and the Olympics.

I started skiing when I was two years old with my parents. They weren’t racers, but they loved the sport. When I was 14 or 15, I had to decide whether to focus completely on school or pursue skiing seriously. It was a tough decision, especially because there wasn’t a clear career path in Andorra, but my passion for the sport left me with no choice – I absolutely wanted to continue.

Yes, it was surreal. After years of injuries and various challenges, standing on the podium was indescribable – not only for me, but also for my family and all of Andorra. It inspired many young skiers in my country and showed them that it is possible to reach the top.

I knew deep inside that I hadn’t yet reached my full potential, and that pushed me forward. My three ACL surgeries made me a better professional; I focused on every detail – training, nutrition, recovery – to come back stronger each time and realized it was working. It was never easy, but the desire to prove myself was stronger than the setbacks.

The preparation is similar to other seasons, but with additional focus. Instead of training in New Zealand, we’re going to Argentina. The main goal is to have a strong World Cup season, that sets the foundation for the Olympics. It’s a great honor to represent Andorra and VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports on this stage – and yes, it’s going to be a special winter.

I’ve always been curious about VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports. I mean, Marcel’s story with his own ski brand is incredible. Henrik and Timon were successful from the start. After speaking with Marcel and testing the new skis, I immediately had this feeling: "Wow, there’s so much potential here!" After so many years with one brand, I felt it was time for a change – the moment felt just right.

It’s really something special! Marcel has always been a huge role model for me – not only as an athlete but also because of his professionalism and mindset. Now being on the same team gives me the opportunity to learn so much both on and off the slopes: whether in terms of technique, preparation, or dealing with challenges. This collaboration motivates me immensely. Marcel has taken skiing to a new level – and he still brings that same standard to the team today.

My core team remains unchanged because we’ve built a strong foundation together. At the same time, we’re now working closely with the VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports team – especially in areas like equipment and service – to ensure everything works seamlessly and is perfectly aligned.

I often train with other national teams to simulate race conditions and work in a professional environment. It’s a win-win situation, as I get the environment I need, and they benefit from our collaboration.

I wake up at 6:00 AM, do a short bike ride to warm up, and then some mobility exercises. After breakfast at 7:00 AM, it’s time to hit the slopes. I prefer a few runs with high intensity and focus. After skiing, I take a short power nap and then focus on strength training and recovery, including sauna and ice baths.

Yes, I always put on my left ski first – it’s a habit. And I listen to reggaeton music before warming up. Once I start my 20- to 25-minute warm-up routine, I turn off the headphones to concentrate fully on the race and focus.

I really enjoy road cycling, especially since running isn’t ideal for me due to past injuries. It keeps me fit, and I can enjoy nature, which is epic here in Andorra. Spending time with my family and friends, enjoying good food – like my favorite dish, Chuleton, the typical Tomahawk steak from the Basque Country – is essential for my mental well-being and focus.

The camp has been around for three years and is aimed at young skiers aged 12 to 16. We provide a professional training environment with video analysis, conditioning, and more. This is my way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of skiers from Andorra.

I think it’s important to share the passion for ski racing and the lifestyle of an athlete. It’s personally very important to me, and for us as a small team, it’s almost like constant team-building.

“La Mamba” was originally a nickname my friends gave me because of my smooth skiing style. It then developed into an annual race event with various formats, music, and a festive atmosphere. It’s a celebration of skiing and community, and it’s amazing to see how it has grown.
